Investment Opportunities (2): Autonomous Vehicles

In previous posts, we discussed investment opportunities, continuing these topics in the startup sector of transportation infrastructure, we want to provide explanations about autonomous vehicles

Autonomous vehicles or self-driving cars are vehicles that, using smart technologies and artificial intelligence, can move automatically without the need for human control. These vehicles typically use various sensors that collect information from the vehicle's surroundings to make the necessary decisions for automatic movement.

Among the companies working in the field of autonomous vehicles are major companies such as Google, Tesla, Apple, Uber, and Waymo (a subsidiary of Google's parent company, Alphabet). Each of these companies works in its own way to develop autonomous vehicles.

The use of autonomous vehicles has many benefits, including reducing traffic accidents and fatalities, increasing road safety, reducing time wasted in traffic, improving fuel and energy efficiency, and increasing comfort and convenience on long trips.

However, the development of autonomous vehicles still faces challenges, including technical, legal, and social challenges. For example, in some cases, the decision-making of autonomous vehicles may differ from traffic laws, requiring changes to traffic laws in some countries. Also, in terms of cybersecurity, autonomous vehicles are at risk and can be targeted by cyber attacks.

This is an area that is still expanding and has the potential to bring significant changes to the automotive industry. Given that the number of vehicles on the road worldwide is increasing, the development of autonomous vehicles could be an effective solution for traffic management and reducing traffic accidents. However, to reach a world of autonomous vehicles, technical, security, legal, and social challenges must be overcome.

In the technical field, developing advanced software, perceiving and recognizing the vehicle's surrounding environment, making quick and correct decisions in critical situations, and building complex computational structures are important topics in the development of autonomous vehicles.

In terms of security, risks such as cyber attacks and hacking the systems of autonomous vehicles require manufacturers of these vehicles to provide stable cybersecurity updates.

In the legal and social sphere, issues such as changes in traffic laws, shifting responsibility from the driver to the car manufacturer, and setting safety standards are notable issues.

Overall, the development of autonomous vehicles is one of the modern and highly advanced technologies in the automotive industry that can help solve many societal problems, including traffic, traffic accidents, fuel consumption, and improving road safety levels.

To achieve this goal, we must address the technical, security, legal, and social challenges in this area. Additionally, for the success in developing autonomous vehicles, it needs to be coordinated with other technologies to transform into a smart and sustainable society.

Benefits of autonomous vehicles include reducing accidents, improving traffic flow, and reducing fuel consumption. By reducing the number of accidents, we can prevent hospital congestion and high insurance costs caused by accidents. Also, by improving traffic, travel time to the destination is reduced, decreasing daily time wastage. Finally, by reducing fuel consumption, we can help reduce air pollution and pay attention to environmental health.

Currently, various companies are working on the development of autonomous vehicles. Some of these companies include Google, Tesla, Ford, General Motors, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi. However, there is still a long way to go for the development and optimization of this technology, and more research and testing are needed in this area.

In general, autonomous vehicles, as one of the modern and highly advanced technologies, have the power to solve many societal problems, especially traffic and road safety issues. However, the development of this technology is accompanied by technical, security, legal, and social challenges that must be addressed for this technology to be fully accepted in society. Also, for optimal use of autonomous vehicles, coordination and cooperation with other technologies are necessary to transform into a smart and sustainable society.

One of the technical challenges related to autonomous vehicles is the high accuracy of the systems designed for them. For autonomous driving, sensor, processing, and control systems need to be designed to respond accurately and correctly to the surrounding environment and the driver. Also, it should be noted that these systems must be stable in the long term and have the capability to be updated.

Another challenge is the security of autonomous vehicles. Security in these vehicles must be guaranteed in such a way that no one can gain access to driving the vehicle and misuse it. Also, protection against security risks from cyber attacks must be ensured.

In addition, there are legal and social challenges. For example, in many countries, laws related to autonomous vehicles have not yet been determined. These laws should be drafted in a way that on one hand addresses the needs of users and on the other hand maintains the security and safety of society. Also, we must pay attention to the legal issue, meaning that in case of an accident, who is responsible and how should it be handled?

Regarding autonomous vehicles, the issue of privacy also arises. Given that these vehicles have many sensors that collect information from the surrounding environment with high accuracy, attention must be paid to who this information is transferred to and how it is used.

Also, another challenge for autonomous vehicles is their economic viability. Currently, autonomous vehicles have high costs and cannot compete with other vehicles. However, with technological advancement and increased production and sales, their prices will gradually decrease.

Finally, it should be said that autonomous vehicles are one of the most significant technological achievements that will significantly contribute to societal and global economic transformations. However, to make optimal use of this technology, we must pay special attention to its technical, security, legal, and social issues and find appropriate solutions for them.

Attention must also be paid to the issue of employment. With the widespread use of autonomous vehicles, a very large number of jobs will be cut, which will lead to increased dissatisfaction and the emergence of social tensions. For this reason, economic development programs must be developed to replace jobs and retrain workers affected by these changes.

Another challenge relates to the safety of autonomous vehicles. These vehicles have not yet been tested sufficiently, which makes some people doubt their safety. For this reason, to reach an acceptable level of safety, more tests must be conducted and their technical and software problems must be resolved.

Finally, it should be noted that the use of autonomous vehicles is moving towards a smarter and more sustainable society. With the reduction in accidents, fuel consumption, and traffic, these vehicles can be presented as an optimal solution for urban and environmental issues. However, to achieve these goals, special attention must be paid to the ability and compatibility of these vehicles with public transportation systems, the optimal use of communication technologies, and how traffic is managed in cities.

In this regard, governments and supportive organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Union (EU) should be supported to make the use of autonomous vehicles a global standard and reach the highest possible level through the development of communication technologies and 5G networks.

Also, it is necessary to pay attention to the issue of privacy in autonomous vehicles. With the help of sensors, cameras, and other advanced technologies, these vehicles collect a great deal of information about drivers and passengers. Therefore, it must be ensured that this information does not fall into the hands of those who are capable of misusing it.

In general, the use of autonomous vehicles will cause significant transformations in the automotive industry and profound changes in people's lifestyles. However, there are still many challenges to their adoption, and more effort must be made to overcome these challenges.
